Can I compress an image to a specific file-size limit?
Yes. Enter any target from 1 KB to 30 MB using KB, MB, KiB, or MiB. We only show a successful result after checking its final byte size, so the downloaded file will not exceed the effective target.
Are my images uploaded or stored?
No. Your original and processed images stay inside your browser and are never uploaded to our server. Refreshing or closing the page clears the working image data from the browser. Files you download remain on your device until you delete them.
Which image formats are supported?
The current version supports static JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP images. GIF, SVG, HEIC, AVIF, animated PNG, and animated WebP files are not supported.
What are the file and dimension limits?
You can choose an image up to 30 MB. An image cannot exceed 20,000 pixels on either side or 50 million pixels in total. Very large images may also process more slowly depending on your device's memory and performance.
Will compression reduce image quality?
It can. For JPG and WebP images, the tool searches for the highest available quality that stays under your target. The smaller the target is compared with the original file, the more noticeable the quality change may become.
Why can image dimensions change during compression?
Some targets cannot be reached by lowering quality alone. When that happens, the tool gradually reduces the pixel dimensions until the file fits under your limit. If the target still cannot be reached safely, you will see an error instead of receiving an oversized file.
Can I resize and convert images too?
Yes. The Resize tool lets you enter exact pixel dimensions, while the Convert tool switches images between JPG, PNG, and WebP. Compression, resizing, and conversion all run locally in your browser.
Can I process multiple images at once?
Not yet. The current version processes one image at a time so each result can be checked before download. Batch processing is planned for a future update, with no release date announced yet.
What happens to transparency, animation, and metadata?
PNG and WebP transparency is supported, but transparent areas become white when converted to JPG. Animated images are not supported. Because images are decoded and re-encoded in the browser, you should not expect original EXIF or other metadata to be preserved.
Is Free Image Tools really free?
Yes. Compression, resizing, and conversion are free to use without an account, sign-in, payment, or software installation. A current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari is recommended.
